Gallery News

 We have cleaned the carpets, washed the windows and changed our window display; we are now ready for the next show. 

 The Black Thai Restaurant downstairs has closed; a Mexican Restaurant is coming in August.

 William Workman has moved to the Pittsburg area. We will miss him and his beautiful black and white photography.

Our Featured Artist is Cora Smith

 I was born in Chicago in 1963. I've been painting since 1988. I remember looking at books as a kid growing up. I loved looking at art and fell in love with the images of the old masters: Rembrandt, DaVinci, etc. I believe a desire for art and specifically portrait art was planted in me then. In school, I avoided art because I had been brought up to be practical. Art was not recognized as a profession that could pay bills. When I did a drawing of my family in the mid-eighties, friends and co-workers began to request that I do drawings for them. Suddenly what I was told was impractical became my work and has since been a passion. Shortly after, in 1991, my husband, who is from Glen Campbell, Pa., moved our family to his home state. At first, I was discouraged. This part of Pa. is still largely rural and very practical and many discouraged me from pursuing art. Nevertheless, I painted. Before long, I began receiving requests in this area for portrait work. It has been slow going but successful. I view artists in this area as pioneers. People here have always loved art but are just recently viewing it as viable for investments. I think it is an exciting place to be as an artist. I am self-taught. I work mainly in oils because I work slowly and oil paint allows me time to be exact and get the details I want. Recently, I have expanded to sculpture and am expecting my first portrait sculpture, a work of my youngest daughter in bronze, to arrive by the end of June. Also, Perry Winkler has given me some insights into the world of watercolor and I have recently been having fun with that medium working at my studio/gallery in Mahaffey, Pa., the Kyrie Gallery.  Watercolor has opened the door to me for fun, free expression in art.  Nevertheless, I believe portraits will always be my passion. Every life God has created is an amazing story and the opportunity to capture a likeness and share in that with each portrait commissioned will always be a blessing and an adventure.

It has been and continues to be a wonderful opportunity to be part of the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art. I do not think there is a more accomplished group of artists from Pa. who are working and exhibiting together in this state. I am inspired by them and count them as friends. The many visitors to the gallery also inspire me and encourage me to continue as an artist in this state. It's good to be here.

In the News

Several members of the Winkler Gallery have won prizes in spring exhibitions. Perry won 1^st Place at Brookville, Carolyn won 1^st place Digital Photography, Tony Gomes won 2^nd place in the pro category Mary Jo won 3^rd.  Tony also won first place in the 3-D category

Past, Present and Future Shows at the Gallery

 QUILT SHOW.  "Pieces of a Dream"; an exhibit of textile art was on display through May 15.  The show featured wall hangings, traditional, contemporary and hand-stitched miniature quilts by artists Vivian Reynolds of Brockway, Pat Workman and Nina Knox of DuBois, and Sue Lemmo of Clearfield.  This show brought many new people to the gallery and created a great deal of interest. It was a success.

In June we featured a show of Photography by the DuBois High School students.  There were many fantastic photos.

We will have a showing of several of Larry Gerber’s paintings and the winners of the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority Clearfield County snapshot contest.  There will be a reception on July  18^th 5:00-8:00 PM.

Artists Out And About

 Doc Hanawalt will be doing a segmented woodturning demonstration at the art4 Gallery in Hollidaysburg on Thursday the 17^th of July. 

Classes

 Deena Greenberg has been teaching mosaic classes at the gallery.

 An all day oil painting workshop July 14-17 on oils or acrylics for all levels will be lead by Larry Gerber from Florida.  

Deena Greenberg has taken classes from him in Florida and is arranging for him to come to the gallery.  There are still a few openings, for further details contact Deena DGreenb729@aol.com or 814-8498716.    Larry’s website is  Gerberfinearts.com

Area Events

 The 25^th SRAC Annual Juried fall show will be at the Clearfield Library.  Receiving will be Oct. 24th & 25^th. A reception will be on the 26^th. The show will be open to the public for three weeks.

 The “Artist in our Midst” show will be at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art downtown Altoona, PA. from August 29th Till Nov 30th

 The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art’s Biennial 2008 Art show will be at Loretto Campus.  11/7/08 – 02/08/09
